A University of California at Berkeley computer science professor is warning that military and terrorist embrace of killer autonomous weapons will likely become a reality in the not-so-distant future.
In a video imagining a future imperiled by tiny weaponized drones, computer science professor Stuart Russel raises serious questions about the dangers of turning artificial intelligence devices into killing machines.
“This short film is more than just speculation,” he said at the conclusion of the video which predicts the results of unleashing “slaughterbots” on humanity. “It shows the results of integrating and miniaturizing technologies that we already have.”
The 35-year veteran of artificial intelligence research added that society must begin now weighing the enormous potential benefit of artificial intelligence technology against the dangers of allowing the production of machines with the ability to “chose to kill humans.”
“We have an opportunity to prevent the future you just saw,” he said. “But the window to act is closing fast.”
The video was produced in collaboration with the Future of Life Institute, an organization backed by Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking. Both Musk and Hawking have also warned in recent years that artificial intelligence in the wrong hands could pose a massive threat to humanity.
