At the December 19th Board of Education meeting:

 

  • The Homer Choir, directed by Diane Pullara, welcomed guests as they arrived by singing a variety of holiday tunes between 6:30 and 7 p.m.

 

  • The Board recognized three teachers who have been nominated for Golden Apple Awards: Candice Klimson, kindergarten teacher at Schilling School; Chani Whitmire, kindergarten teacher at Schilling School; and Kelly Mitchell, 2nd grade teacher at Goodings Grove School

 

  • The Board recognized Young School 4th grade teacher Jordana Letizia who was selected to attend the Front Row Winter Institute in San Francisco on March 1 and 2. She was one of eight teachers selected for the all-expenses paid personalized learning/technology institute. Participants will swap strategies, become experts in personalized learning and work with Front Row’s product team to design a new product feature

 

  • Teachers Union representative Cathy Clayton reported everyone is looking forward to winter break and wished everyone a Merry Christmas

 

  • Support Staff Union representative Susan Koziarski thanked those who participated in the Union’s food drive and wished everyone a great holiday

 

  • Tria Architecture, Inc. Architect James Petrakos explained the process for completing repairs identified in the recent Facility Audit:
    • Pre-design
    • Schematics
    • Design development
    • Construction documents
    • Bidding and negotiations
    • Construction observation

He went on to explain that the District is not locked into completing any of the repairs until bids are approved by the Board

 

  • The Board approved the following personnel recommendations:

Separation of Employment

  1. Robin Carberry – bus driver, Transportation, effective November 16, 2017

 

Resignations

  1. Sabrina Murray – 0.6 FTE Occupational Therapist, Butler School, effective December 31,

2017

  1. Daisy Peters – cheerleading coach, effective November 29, 2017
  2. Daisy Peters – track coach, effective November 29, 2017

 

 Requests for Leave of Absence (beginning and end dates open to modification)

  1. Michelle Schultz – 4th grade Gifted and Talented teacher, Butler School, FMLA tentative start date of March 5, 2018 through the end of the 2017-2018 school year and will return at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year
  2. Meghan Fitzgerald – kindergarten teacher, Schilling School, FMLA effective April 27, 2018 through the end of the 2017-2018 school year and will return at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year
  3. Gregory Zurales – Assistant Principal, Homer Junior High School, FMLA effective March 28, 2018 through May 9, 2018 and will return on May 10, 2018
  4. Barb Logsdon – Library Media Professional, Butler School, FMLA intermittent leave beginning November 3, 2017 and continuing through the end of the 2017-2018 school year
  5. Nancy Lahey – Dispatcher, Transportation, FMLA beginning January 23, 2018 through April 3, 2018 and will return April 4, 2018

 

  • The Board approved a security assessment to be performed by Tria Architecture, Inc. in the amount of $8,850

 

  • The Board approved moving forward with the 2018 mechanical pre-purchase of univents for Homer Junior High School for an estimated cost of $1,720,000 plus architect fees

 

  • The Board approved moving forward with the 2018 renovations at Homer Junior High School, including the design and installation of univents for an estimated cost of $1,895,000 plus architect fees

 

  • The Board approved moving forward with the HVAC system for transportation for an estimated cost of $19,250

 

  • The Board accepted the retirement of the following individuals subject to compliance with the terms and conditions of the District’s one-time IMRF retirement incentive program and to approve separation agreements with said employees:
    • Sylvia Chord – bus driver, corrected retirement date from December 5, 2020 to June 30, 2020
    • Marsha Thompson – paraprofessional, retirement date of June 30, 2019
    • Mary Peceniak – nurse, retirement date of June 30, 2020

 

  • Member DeFilippis asked that the Board review the District’s exit interview process at a future meeting and determine when the information should be shared with the Board

 

The Next Regular School Board Meeting is January 23, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.
